Growing Together: Capoeira and the Community Conference, Milwaukee, WI. 11/15/08
Capoeira is an activity that strengthens people and communities. We welcomed community members to participate in a weekend of discussions, classes, and performances with guest Contra-Mestre Jim.

Assembly of God World Missions Program Fund Raiser, Oak Creek, WI, 10/18/08
Associação de Capoeira Angola Corpo e Movimento and Brazilian Cultural Foundation performed Capoeira for the enjoyment of approximately 700 guests attending the Assembly of God world missions program fund raiser banquet.

Hispanic Professional of Greater Milwaukee “Noche de Sabor Carnival”, Milwaukee, WI, 10/3/08
Associação de Capoeira Angola Corpo e Movimento and Brazilian Cultural Foundation performed Capoeira at the “Noche de Sabor” annual fundraiser. This celebration offers networking in a social atmosphere, and supports programs and operations, including the organization’s scholarship program.

Play Capoeira and Read a Book - Capoeira at Four Los Angeles Libraries, Los Angeles, 9/20/08, 9/27/08
Associação de Capoeira Angola Corpo e Movimento and Brazilian Cultural Foundation offered a series of events at four Los Angeles Public Libraries (El Sereno Library, Echo Park Library, Robert Louis Stevenson Branch Library, and Benjamin Franklin Library). The event included a book-reading session, workshop, and presentation. This event was free and open to the public.

“Capoeira Angola: A Pastime that Unites People” (Los Angeles and Milwaukee), CA and WI, 5/20/08-5/25/08
As the title suggests, we view Capoeira Angola as a pastime that unites people in the community. Portions of the event were held in Pasadena (California), Kenosha (Wisconsin), and Milwaukee (Wisconsin).

“Third Annual Harvey School PTA Cultural Folk Fair”, Kenosha, WI, 5/17/08
Several hundred members of the immediate community participated in the Third Annual Cultural Folk Fair. We offered an interactive music class and a presentation of Capoeira which included the community members who participated in the music class.

“UW-Waukesha Diversity Night”, Waukesha, WI, 5/16/08
We were invited to perform Capoeira in celebration of the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha’s Diversity Night event.

Capoeira at Arroyo Seco Library (Highland Park), Los Angeles, CA, 4/19/08
Approximately forty members of the immediate community participated in our event on this Saturday. In this presentation, we showed how one plays the percussion instrument known as the berimbau.

“Kinnickinnic River Cleanup Project,” Cleveland Park, Milwaukee, WI, 4/19/08, 10/11/08
Over 215 community members joined together to cleanup the shores of Milwaukee’s Kinnickinnic River. This event was one of approximately 20 similar events organized to cleanup Milwaukee’s waterways. In celebration of the event, we offered a Capoeira performance.

“Celebrating Carnaval with Capoeira,” California State University, Northridge, CA 4/16/08
We were invited to give a demo of Capoeira at the the Student Union at California State University, Northridge. The event began with five samba dancers and ended with Capoeira.

“Capoeira: A Community Activity” Workshop, Pasadena, CA 2/14/08 - 2/17/08
Steven Antonson, known as Trenel Preá, led a Capoeira music workshop in Pasadena following the Black History Month Event in Pasadena.

“Strengthening Traditional Values…Family, Education, Integrity, Unity,” 26th Annual Black History Festival, Pasadena, CA 2/16/08
The Associação de Capoeira Corpo e Movimento played the music and game of Capoeira Angola for the second consecutive year at the Black History Month Event in Pasadena. The presentation followed the Black History Month Parade that ended in Robinson Park.

“Jeff Fest” Fundraising Event, Los Angeles, California, CA, 12/08/07
Friends and relatives of Jeff Smith organized a fundraising event to assist him in dealing with medical responsibilities related to his multiple eye surguries. Jeff is an instructor for the Associação de Capoeira Corpo e Movimento. Jeff is back at Capoeira and recovering quickly.

“Moving Children Through Capoeira,” Mosaic Church, William Carey University, Pasadena, CA, 11/18/07
David Kim, a Brazilian member of the Associação de Capoeira Corpo e Movimento, invited the group to participate in a presentation for children at Mosaic Church.

“Celebrate The Arts” Day, Marengo Elementary School, South Pasadena, CA, 11/04/07
Our group was invited to participate in an arts event at a local elementary school in the area. Many young children participated in the various arts activities prepared for the day.

Tribal: Pura Capoeira Angola Performance, Humphrey Scottish Rite Center, Milwaukee,WI, 9/15/07
We were invited to perform Capoeira during the Tribal: Pura show. The event showcased bellydance performers from across the country as well as african dance and percussion.

Ability First Work Center, Lawrence L. Frank Center, Pasadena, CA, 9/7/07
Abilities First continues to lead the way in providing services for children and adults with disabilities. The organization invited us to share the art of Capoeira at one of their Friday evening activities.

We were invited to perform Capoeira and Maculelê at the West Allis Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Outing and Dinner Fundraiser.

ACCM student Emiliano Lake-Herrera’s senior thesis exhibition included a series of paintings related to the art of Capoeira. In celebration, members of the ACCM performed during the thesis show.

University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Kenosha, WI, 3/27/07
We were invited to perform Capoeira for the students and faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside’s International Week event.

2000-2006 Selections

California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, 5/7/06
The Associação de Capoeira Corpo e Movimento and Brazilian Cultural Foundation celebrated the 7th Annual Capoeira Angola and Brazilian Cultural Conference at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. The event began with a lecture series entitled “The African-Brazilian Connection.” The presenters included Dr. Bryan Kennedy, Dr. Robert Voeks, Dr. Wacira wa Gathaiga, and Dr. James Sera. The topics covered included slavery on the African continent, slavery in Brazil, medicinal leaves of the candomblé religion in Brazil, and the criminalization and legalization of Capoeira in Brazil. Brazilian musician Radik played a number of original songs in the MPB style. The Associação de Capoeira Corpo e Movimento offered a Capoeira Angola performance with guests Mestre Angola, Professor Jim, Monitor Preá, and the group.

Milwaukee Public Market, Milwaukee, WI, 2/26/06
In the tradition of Capoeira being practiced at or near public markets, we organized a public Capoeira performance at the Milwaukee Public Market.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Glendale, CA, 10/01/05
The Associação de Capoeira Corpo e Movimento participated in the event by offering a Capoeira performance. Funds went to the American Cancer Society.

The organizers of the Tofu Festival invited the Associação de Capoeira on two occassion to participate in the Tofu Festival in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Los Angeles.

NIA Education Charter School, Altadena, CA, 10/1/04
The Associação de Capoeira offered a workshop to the students of the charter school. Following the workshop was a presentation of Capoeira Angola. Approximately 60 students participated in the event.
